Mahalo for your interest in the Kaho'iwai Teacher Certification Program
eligibility requirements:
Before you apply, please ensure that you meet the following eligibility requirements
- Minimum of a Bachelor degree from a US accredited institution recognized by CHEA (or an international degree evaluated as comparable by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE).
- If not a graduate of a US High School or college, an IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent) is required.
- Successful completion of State Praxis Exam as required
- Successful completion of interview and writing activities
- Min 2.5 GPA (Bachelor degree)
- Must be over 18-years of age and verify ID
- Must have access to a computer and internet that can access Google Suites for Education.
- Must be able to attend in-residence programs each term
- Preference is given to those who express a desire to teach in Hawai’i or are employed in a Hawaiian Focused Charter School.
Please complete the expression of interest and then be prepared for the following:
Applications require:
- A writing activity,
- Interview,
- official transcripts,
- letter of recommendation by current employer or letter of endorsement from a principal,
- other documents as requested (salary advice or pay slip)
If you submit an expression of interest at this time, your information will be added to our system, and you will receive a follow-up email with instructions for completing the application process.
- There are no credit transfer opportunities established with other Higher Education Institutions at present.
- The award of transfer credit is at the discretion of the receiving institution.
- Students who have completed coursework at other accredited institutions may apply to the Academic Dean for credit transfer.

Technology Requirements
It is the responsibility of the student to provide the required technology for study in Kahoʻiwai as outlined below.
Populi runs on up-to-date releases of popular web browsers. Most web browsers have some sort of auto-update function, so you may never even need to think about this part. And using an up-to-date web browser won’t just benefit your Populi use—it’s one of the best things you can do for your overall internet security!

- Students are required to provide their own laptop and computer.

Criteria for English Language Proficiency:
Please review the following language proficiency requirements
Kahoʻiwai requires students to demonstrate English language proficiency by submitting a United States high school diploma or a degree from an appropriately accredited institution where English is the principal language of instruction. Prospective students whose native language is not English and who have not earned a degree from an appropriately accredited institution where English is the principal language of instruction must demonstrate college-level proficiency in English through one of the following:
- A minimum total score of 60 on the paper-delivered Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL PBT), or 71 on the Internet Based Test (iBT)
- 6.0 on the International English Language Test (IELTS)
- 44 on the Pearson Test of English Academic Score Report
- 95 on the Duolingo English Test
- 53 on the 4-skill Michigan English Test (MET)
- 650/LP on the Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Competency in English (ECCE) or the Michigan Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE)
- A minimum score on the College Board Accuplacer ESL Exam Series as follows:
- ESL Language Use: Score of 85
- ESL Listening: Score of 80
- ESL Reading: Score of 85
- ESL Sentence Meaning: Score of 90
- ESL Writeplacer: Score of 4
- Comprehensive Score for all exams of 350
- A minimum grade of Pre-1 on the Eiken English Proficiency Exam
- A minimum B-2 English proficiency level identified within the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) standards and assessed through various ESOL examinations, including the University of Cambridge; or
- A transcript indicating completion of at least 30 semester credit hours with an average grade of “B” or higher at an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Secretary of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or accepted foreign equivalent that is listed in the International Handbook of Universities where the language of instruction was English.
- Successful completion of this program requires proficiency in academic English, as graduates must meet Hawaiʻi Teacher Standards Board licensure requirements and demonstrate competency in instructional planning, assessment, and professional communication.
- Kahoʻiwai does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national origin. English proficiency requirements are applied uniformly to all applicants and are based solely on academic and licensure standards necessary for successful completion of the program and teacher certification requirements in Hawaiʻi.
