Kaho‘iwai is an Education Provider Program (EPP) that offers nationally accredited post-secondary teacher education programs aimed at developing individuals into qualified educators of Hawaiian children. Kaho’iwai is designed to graduate student focused and reflective practitioners grounded in Hawaiian values and committed to lifelong learning.

Employment Opportunities
The program is designed for individuals with an undergraduate degree from an accredited university who wish to work with Native Hawaiian children in education. The program does not guarantee employment. Elementary and secondary programs are available. The license fields supported by the secondary program include Math, Science, English, Hawaiian Studies, and Social Studies in the 6-12 years.
Online Instruction
Online instruction is provided by experienced and qualified higher education faculty selected from the Hawaiian community, trained in the specifics of the program, and supported by program staff. The program does not train candidates to speak or teach Hawaiian language to the degree required for immersions schools.
Program Quality Accreditation
The program received the maximum initial period of accreditation available to programs. Program quality is continuously assessed using external tools, rubrics, and coursework. On successful completion graduates can apply for licensing in the state of Hawai`i. One unique assessment tool is the Kauhale principles rubric using Hawaiian values as a basis for formal assessment.
Construction & Delivery
The construction and delivery of the program reflects an indigenous education framework in which each component of the philosophy is clearly articulated and implemented.
In-Residence Components
The program is conducted at sites of cultural significance across Hawai`i. These sites offer outstanding `āina-based facilities in support of teaching and learning. The residentials are supplemented by online learning activities, practicum supervision, and mentoring within the school setting. There is a dedicated student support officer available for students.
